Candy Darling has the distinction of having had no less than three well-known pop songs written about her during her lifetime. First came "Citadel" by the Rolling Stones, from the 1967 album Their Satanic Majesties Request. Inspired by a visit to New York City, in its refrain the song refers to an apparently memorable meeting between the young Stones and Candy and her friend Taffy Terrific.

Next, the Velvet Underground released their third, self-titled album in 1969, featuring the sweet and melancholy classic "Candy Says". And last but not least, the beloved hit "Walk on the Wild Side" from Lou Reed's album Transformer (1971), with a verse about Candy, still plays on the radio today.

"Candy Says" has since been recorded by a multitude of performers, including Blind Melon (1994), Garbage (2002), Beth Gibbons of Portishead (2003), Martin Gore (2003), and Kathryn Williams (2004). "Walk on the Wild Side" has been recorded both by French chanteuse Vanessa Paradis and by Texas Lightning (2006 Eurovision contestants for Germany!).
